'All the world's a stage'

Jaques' famous speech might be the theme for this year's Shakespeare Festival. Both our comedies feature a leading character in the role of director and manipulator, and both our comedies will provide you with a magical, theatrical experience.

As You Like It has Rosalind, one of Shakespeare's greatest female characters, but disguised as a boy, desperately trying to hold on to her beloved Orlando, and, at the same time, shake off the country wench Phoebe. The Forest of Arden provides good company, with the melancholy Jaques and the city clown, Touchstone. Whilst in The Tempest, Shakespeare's last great comedy, we have Prospero, trying, with the aid of the spirit Ariel, to secure the marriage of Miranda and Ferdinand, and to revenge an old wrong.

As You Like It not only illustrates that people can and do change, but also celebrates their ability to change for the better. Certainly, the transformations have much to do with the restorative, almost magical effects of life in the forest. What gives The Tempest its hypnotic, magical atmosphere is the series of dreamlike events it stages, such as the storm, the magical banquet, and the wedding masque.

Accompanied by glorious live music, these two comedies present a feast for the eye and the ear and will remind you of the magical theatricality of Shakespeare's story-telling. Pendley's 58th Season promises to be full of lightness, love and laughter.
