FROM APRIL 2010

In 1949, Dorian Williams founded the Pendley Shakespeare Festival amid the Victorian finery of his magnificent ancestral home. Sixty-one years later, it remains our privilege to bring Shakespeare to new audiences in the grounds of this stunning Manor House. Join us from the 3rd to the 14th August for Shakespeare alfresco! Explore the twilight; embrace the elements; and enjoy evening performances featuring two of Shakespeare’s most colourful characters: watch Katherine, the Shrew, being “tamed” by the arrogant and dashing Petruchio in The Taming of the Shrew, and witness the rise and fall of one of the greatest of Shakespeare’s villains in Richard III. The beautiful grounds of the Hotel will open at 6pm, so we guarantee time enough to enjoy a picnic, or why not treat yourself to a pre-show meal in our award-winning restaurant?

The Taming of the Shrew (3rd – 7th August)
“That wench is stark mad, or wonderful froward!”
We welcome new director James Copp to Pendley to get to grips with the feisty “shrew” of the title in this exciting new production. Can Katherine be tamed by Petruchio? Will the beautiful Bianca end up with her love, Lucentio, or will she be doomed to live as an old maid thanks to her wild, elder sister, or married off to one of her money-grabbing suitors? We welcome Persia Lawson in her Pendley debut as Katherine, the shrew.

Richard III (10th – 14th August)
“A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse”
For the first time in 15 years, RICHARD III will be performed at the Festival. Douglas Dean, last seen in 2008 as Shylock on the Pendley stage, takes the title role in what promises to be a thrilling new production. Can Richard, Duke of Gloucester succeed in his mission to ruthlessly murder, plot and kill his way to the top and become King of England, and when he gets there, can he stay there for long? Give yourself a treat this summer – see them both!
